It is not the electronics I get attached to but the memories they bring back. I happen to have a 4.5" B&W crt tv with analog tuning ... no not just an NTSC reciever an analog dial no fancy dancy mechanical stops for the channels. I bought it new 17 years ago as well... at the time it was the only tv we had. Nowdays I buy most of our electronics at the thrift store, I can get a 27" tv, vcr, and dvd player all for less $ than a paid for the small B&W tv I saved my lawn mowing money to buy. It keeps the working electronics out of the land fill and gives money to a good cause. If you are going to smash a CRT pick up a broken one from a repair shop or the electronics bin at the local dump.
Make sure you don't dispose of the waste in landfill. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electronic_waste Read the bit about the problems of CRTs. If you intend to smash the CRT there is a hole with a thin section of glass at the end. Put the screwdriver down the hole and break the glass to let the pressure equalise. And if you really want to get that smashing urge out volunteer as a IT-waste recycler for a few weeks like I did a while ago during a sabatical. You get to "disassemble, dead" lots of IT stuff.
Don't do it. It will outlive that super-duper all singing and dancing LCD and possibly outlive you. When pixels go down on the lcd yuo'll regret killing your friend.
