Your observation about the lack of technical understanding (let alone expertise) on the part of the judges is mirrored daily in citizens in general. Science and quantitive thinking ability is rapidly becoming a scarce commodity. Recall the recent "boy in the balloon" hoax. Not a single news person stopped to quickly estimate the size of a balloon required to lift the child, or question, if indeed he could be inside, how he might survive breathing helium. Instead, that the caper was a hoax wasn't determined until a police investigation and some sort of confession. Our country is in trouble on many fronts.
