John Fontanella, vice president at AMR Research, and I talked this week about Hewlett-Packard's new RFID asset tagging service. HP will affix RFID tags to servers and other IT equipment before shipping the products to customers. It's pretty ingenious, though a simple concept. Think about it. How many data centers are there in the world? How many server farms?
HP supplies DreamWorks Animation with servers, about 400 desktops and 600 CPUs in the data center render farm. That's only one company. What about the other six top movie studios and countless music labels that now offer digital music?
Consider Google Yahoo, Microsoft and other search engines. Digital ad networks that serve-up text and video ads on search engines. Don't forget the online massively multiplayer online game (MMOG) companies, security companies backing up data for businesses and consumers, and software as a service (SaaS) companies like Salesforce.com.
